Vivek Govind Limaye

(1950-2007)

After passing out from IIM Ahmedabad, Vivek joined Murphy (of the famous Murphy baby).

After a stint of 2 years there, he quit Murphy somewhere in 1978 to join Philips India in their budgeting function. He got married to Sheela on 21st June 1979. They have two sons, Amol, now 36, and Prasad, now 32.

While life was mostly uneventful thereafter, he rose at a steady pace in the organization and in 1992 took a transfer to Pune as Divisional Controller for the lighting division in Philips. He spent the next two and half years in Philips and then his real passion took over.

While in Philips, he used to teach Financial Management in Symbiosis Institute of Foreign Trade (later changed to Symbiosis Institute of International Business [SIIB]) as a visiting faculty. Realizing that this is what he needed to do full-time, he quit Philips and made his hobby his profession.

He always kept himself updated on every new advance in the Finance domain. He used to spend a lot of online hunting down and reading latest research by Finance Gurus. He built a nice home library of advanced financial management books which any Finance student or professional would have been envious of.

Learning and teaching Finance became his life. No wonder he became very popular with his students even when scoring a zero in a test set by him was at times a difficult proposition!

Vivek was an avid investor and kept abreast of all things stock market. He used to follow business news very closely.

He used to conduct ‘Finance for Non-finance’ corporate programs for employees who were about to retire. The programs provided financial guidance for post-retirement investment decisions. Other than finance he had a very few hobbies, one of them being listening to old classical songs. Manna Day and Rafi were his favorite singers.

Everything was going on well until he was detected with liver cancer on 24 May 2006. A blood transfusion carried out in the 80s led to Hepatitis C which caused the dreaded disease. He took the news in his stride and never once complained about it.

After many a treatments, on 24 January 2007, he lost a battle for the first and last time in his life.
