TUSHAR N SHAH
FPM

Tushaar Shah completed his Fellow Programme in Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1978 with specialization in managerial economics. Although his doctoral work there was focused on money and banking, Shah’s subsequent work forayed into the economics of dairying, oilseeds, forestry and irrigation.
He taught Economics for Rural Managers to several generations of IRMA students. To bring the village economy to his classroom, in the early 1980’s, Shah developed a simulation game called Naranpur Express using live data from one of his field research projects. The game confronted students with everyday decision-making in a household managing mixed-farming system, dealing with risks and uncertainties, transacting on input and output markets.
Even today, Naranpur Express continues to be used to introduce new batches of IRMA students to the intricacies of managing a farm household economy.
Tushaar Shah, an economist and public policy specialist, is a former director of the Institute of Rural Management at Anand in India.
Over the past 35 years, Shah’s main research interests have been in water institutions and policies in South Asia, a subject on which he has published extensively. His notable contributions have been in comparative analyses of groundwater governance in South Asia, China and Mexico.
More recently, his interests have lay in comparative analyses of water institutions and policies across Asia and between South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Shah has also worked extensively on energy-irrigation nexus in India.
Shah was honored with the Outstanding Scientist award of the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in 2002. Shah serves on the boards of several academic institutions and NGOs and is a director on the board of the ICICI Bank.
