After Ahmedabad I went to Hindustan Thompson Associate (Delhi) for three years. Got married in 1978 to my wonderful wife, Archana. One year later my in-laws enticed me to Nagpur as Marketing Manager for Baidyanath Ayurved Bhawan. That lasted another three years.
While teaching some evening marketing research classes in Nagpur I decided I wanted to do it for a living. Professor Vora was vehement that I pursue my doctoral studies at IIMA (FPM) – he was afraid that if I went to America for the doctorate I may never return to India. And his guess was correct. I opted for America, where I have lived since 1982 – first three years in Oregon and since then in Northern California.
My profession allowed me to work in other countries and that was a big bonus – teaching in Spain, Italy, China, UK, and one full year as Visiting Prof at IIMA (1992-1993) while I was on sabbatical from my tenured position. Am Professor Emeritus for the last three years and enjoying traveling, gardening, reading, photography, yoga, and such.
Can hardly believe it myself but am still “running behind” even in retirement - on things I want to do. Two books were in the works but are still largely inside my head, not on paper/digital media!
But have enjoyed the journey of life, and am glad I quit corporate life in a timely manner and went to academia. It has been fulfilling.
Archana has been busy raising two wonderful children:
Gaurav (married in 2016) is an entrepreneur/consultant in San Francisco (computer engineering and statistical modeling) and Supriya is pursuing doctoral studies in Public Health at Harvard, which she plans to complete in 2019. Both got their undergraduate as well as Master’s degrees from Stanford University.
Our daughter-in-law Sarah is the only right-brained person in the family, and has a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. She is exploring art forms involving plant materials (mostly flowers). She has worked at design firms but is increasingly focused on her own art at their apartment and they have an entire room devoted to her art work!
