On my return from IIMA I joined the Sri Lankan government bureaucracy. But after some period of time, I realized that my concepts, ideas and philosophy were not in harmony with those of my political masters. I found it very difficult to co-exist with their ultra conservative, right wing ideology and political agenda.
Can you remember, Raman, in our Year Book my colleague who penned my write-up very correctly identified me as a revolutionary (I really do not know who wrote it. But he was absolutely correct.) The conflict became more visible after the authoritarian conservative right wing government of JR Jayawardene came in to office.
The cabinet minister under whom I had to work did not like my independent, professional attitude. With him, I had only two choices. Eat the humble pie and remain or Quit and maintain my professional respect and dignity. I chose the latter.
After leaving the bureaucracy, I did a brief sojourn in Singapore and Malaysia, but eventually got homesick & came back. Then I started teaching in the University of Sri Jayawardenepura (Administrative capital of Sri Lanka) and also a visiting professor at the University of Kelaniya (2,600 old one of the former capitals of Sri Lanka, Situated 15km from north of Colombo, our commercial capital). Worked as an examiner for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and the Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka.
I find complete satisfaction with my academic work, which brings me a lot of happiness. I retired from university academic work a few years back and ‘minding my own business’ now.. I run a management consultancy business mainly for the small and medium scale enterprises, which also brings me a lot of satisfaction, because I am helping small businessmen/women. Also, I work as a director of the Petroleum Dealers Association, a trade chamber (By the way, we own a gas station, a medium scale enterprise.)
Personal life : Married to Rohinie, a former banker (with the People’s Bank, second largest bank in the country).
Two children : Son: Ravi -an engineer & Daughter - Gauri - IT specialist. Both married. One grand child. Kanishka
I habitually watch NDTV. Follow Indian politics, happenings, events and elections regularly.
I listen to Indian classical music very often..Watch Indian classical movies. My entire family join me in these. They are all lovers of North Indian classical music. and films of Satyajit Ray & Shyam Bengal etc.
And I read The Hindu, Times of India, Indian Express & a number of other papers very often, over the internet. In short I haven’t lost my Indian touch. I’m a.fan of Chetan Bhagat. I think I have read the most of his novels.
