Right from the time I was trying to get into IIMA, something or the other was going wrong. Firstly, I received notice of date and venue of entrance test just 2 days before the test. I did not get any time to prepare for the test. At that time I was working in Secunderabad office of Calico Mills, the most modern textile mill in those days owned by the Sarabhai family.
After I got admission and when I was on my way to Ahmedabad by train, my bag containing all original certificates was stolen.
Prof. Seshan was understanding and gave me enough time to apply for duplicates and submit them. Ofcourse, certified true copies were already with the institute so that helped a bit. This over, came the end of the course and the last term. Due to bad planning, hesitation to ask for favour from relatives etc, I could not pay my last term fees in time and there were moments of serious tension. Finally it was all over but with a big blow. The institute did not provide placement help. All efforts I made to be shortlisted in HLL and P & G went in vain.
Anyway it is all over now and the past is best left behind and forgotten.
From 1976 to 1981 I worked with Mafatlal Group in their Textile Division. It was the 3rd largest group in those days. From 1981 to 1984, I went into manufacturing of shirting and supplying the same to S Kumars. There was a serious recession in the industry in 1984 and I gave up this activity. From 1984 to 1987 I worked with 4 different companies in the textile sector. The last job was the S Kumars as head of their shirting division.
In 1987 I got offer from Bhojsons Group in Lagos Nigeria and worked with them till May 2004 in various capacities and divisions. This was the best period of my working career where I could try out all thoughts and theories that I had in my mind both in terms of Product Development, Product launch, Marketing strategy, increase in productivity, reduction of costs etc. I achieved reasonable success rate in trying my theories out.
In 1998, I got PR of New Zealand and went there to settle down with my family. Unfortunately, my daughter was losing 2 years in education and so we gave up the PR.
After return to India, I joined S Kumars Nationwide Limited (SKNL), owners of brands like Reid & Taylor and Belmonte with AB and SRK as brand ambassadors respectively.
I left them this Feb’ 16 and am now working with a Textile and Garment Unit Clothing Culture Ltd as a consultant.
I got married in 1979 with Nayna, have a son Viral and a daughter Krutika, both in US. My son works with Cognizant while my daughter works with Microsoft and my SIL with McKinsey.
